Volkswagen took the wraps off the 2027 Atlas on the eve of the 2026 New York Auto Show. Like its smaller sibling, the Tiguan, it follows a more evolutionary approach. We must say, though, we love what we see. Up front, we see a new take on the front fascia, featuring dual LED light bars and stacked headlights. These complement the illuminated Volkswagen logo and the masked upper grille. Most importantly, the light bars and illuminated badge come standard on all but the base model. The rest of the design looks like an evolution of the old Atlas, but made much cleaner and more modern. Three new exterior colors join the palette for 2027: Blackberry, Sacramento Green, and Sandstone.
Inside, the 2027 Volkswagen Atlas is all about a premium experience. It features high-quality soft-touch surfaces and real wood trim as standard. The interior also has three color options: Pebble Grey, two-tone black and dark grey, and Deep Wine. Higher trims include Nappa leather upholstery. Meanwhile, 10-color ambient interior lighting comes standard. The top two trims have 30 colors to choose from for ambient lighting.

2027 Volkswagen Atlas: Family-Friendly First
Big three-row SUVs are all about comfort, and the 2207 Atlas is no different. It comes packed with plenty of convenience features. These include a standard power liftgate and a 12-way ergonomic driver’s seat. Higher trims even include massaging front seats with added thigh support and ventilated second-row seats. A panoramic sunroof and second-row captain’s chairs remain an option.
On the tech front, every 2027 Atlas comes with a 10.25-inch Digital Cockpit Pro configurable gauge cluster. Meanwhile, base models complement that with a standard 12.9-inch touchscreen, while the rest of the lineup uses a massive 15-inch free-standing display. Additionally, 7 USB-C ports and Qi2 wireless charging are available. The range-topping model also has a 14-speaker Harman Kardon premium audio system.
Every 2027 Atlas comes standard with the IQ. Drive suite of active safety technologies, which Volkswagen says received refinements. On top of that, Travel Assist now allows for driver-initiated lane changes, while Emergency Assist can now guide the vehicle to the side of the road. Moreover, the base model now comes standard with front and rear parking sensors, while the top trim includes Park Assist Plus.

Familiar Underpinnings
The 2027 Atlas rides on an upgraded MQB Evo architecture. Volkswagen said this was done to maintain the spacious interior, specifically the roomy third row. Length increases by about an inch, while every other wheelbase remains identical to the outgoing Atlas.
Under the hood, you’ll find the new EA888 Evo5 2.0-liter turbo-four with 282 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. That’s up 13 hp, but down 15 lb-ft over last year’s Atlas. However, Volkswagen expects better fuel economy ratings with this new engine, which comes paired exclusively to an eight-speed automatic transmission. Towing capacity checks in at 5,000 pounds with a factory-installed trailer hitch. Additionally, 4Motion AWD is available across the lineup. Volkswagen also confirmed a hybrid variant scheduled to arrive with the Atlas’ mid-cycle refresh.
The 2027 Atlas goes on sale this fall. As before, it’ll be built at Volkswagen’s plant in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Expect the two-row Atlas Cross Sport to arrive soon after the standard three-row model.
