It’s been a hot minute since Volvo had a 50-series vehicle and it may bring one back in the new EX50. A report from Automotive News indicates that the Swedish automaker will replace the EX40 with this new, slightly larger SUV. Based on the SPA3 platform shared with the EX60, the EX50 will feature the same charging capability and benefit from SPA3’s modularity and lowered costs.
The report also indicated that the Volvo EX50 will be larger than the vehicle it replaces, per Automotive News’ insiders. Think similar size to a Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Ford Mustang Mach-E. However, we did some digging ourselves and found some potential dimesions for the EX50 thanks to the folks at Swedespeed. According to their sources, the EX50, which is under develoment with the code V326, will be 4.52 meters long. That’s roughly 178 inches or 15 inches in length, giving it similar dimension to SUVs like the old Mercedes GLK and latest Toyota C-HR.
As far as arrival times go, the EX50 enters production in spring 2027 at Volvo’s new plant in Kosice, Slovakia. In the U.S. lineup, it effectively replaces both the EX30 and EX40 compact luxury SUVs. It’ll serve as the brand’s new entry-level model alongside a heavily updated XC40. As for pricing, the EX50 is expected to start in the high $40,000 range.
We can’t wait to see this new all-electric Volvo in the metal. Based on what we know, the EX50 is the perfect complement to the EX60 and EX90. With an 800-volt architecture, this may just be the winner Volvo needs. Expect the EX50 to arrive in the U.S. in the fall of 2027, likely with pricier P10 AWD versions launching first. Like the EX40, a single-motor rear-drive variant should also be in the cards.
