Fresh off some good news of growth, solid sales performance, and good cash management, Volvo revealed that it will introduce two new models at the end of the summer. This comes after the Swedish automaker revealed it expects significantly stronger sales for the second half of 2026. It’s coming off a strong recovery in the United States and growing its footprint in Europe, its home market. However, China remains a hard market made tougher by the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, which has negatively affected the entire auto industry. The brand continues to strengthen its electrified offerings across the board, including battery-electric models.
Speaking of electrified vehicles, Volvo did not disclose what these vehicles are. We think we have a good idea, though. Taking a look at the current lineup, the XC40 and XC60 come to mind. The former is reportedly receiving another refresh, while the latter is receiving a new plug-in hybrid powertrain. Additionally, the automaker confirmed that its South Carolina plant will build XC60s alongside the EX90. That may be its first range-extended electric vehicle (EREV), a type of plug-in hybrid that operates mainly as an EV and has a gas engine designed specifically to power a generator that feeds electricity to a massive traction battery. Meanwhile, the XC40 is receiving another refresh, which likely includes the new 11.6-inch touchscreen from the XC90 and XC60. In terms of powertrains, the smaller Volvo SUV may finally bring a plug-in hybrid variant to North American shores.
Following those models, Volvo will reveal its strategy update on September 17. It includes an outline of its most ambitious product plan to date and its approach to regionalization. We suspect that it may tease the next-generation EX40, too, another important vehicle alongside its SPA3 platform mate, the larger EX60.
