Polestar 4 Wagon/SUV: What We Know

This past February, Polestar outlined its upcoming product release from 2026 to 2028. We knew the sexy Polestar 5 four-door GT would launch first. However, the automaker caught us off guard when it revealed two additional models between the Polestar 5 and the Polestar 7. One of those should make every enthusiast drool: the Polestar 4 wagon. Let’s talk about what we know about it, shall we?

Polestar 4 Wagon: A More Practical Shape

The wagon joins the less traditional coupe-like variant in the lineup, which will wear the “coupe” moniker going forward. Its more practical sibling will be known as the Polestar 4. Based on the teasers from two months ago, this new model keeps most of the same styling as the current car. However, it features a squarer rear end with a more conventional roof line. The covered portion of the image also hints that the wagon has roof rails, highlighting its added versatility.

Like the windowless variant, the Polestar 4 wagon has the same front fascia and full-width rear LED light bar. Things diverge in the back with the addition of a traditional glass rear window on the more practical variant. However, despite it being marketed as an SUV, it’s not. Since it appears to have the same ground clearance as the 4 coupe, the wagon may turn into the Polestar equivalent of a Volvo Cross Country model. Slightly lifted, but still a car, just with body cladding to make it look more rugged. In an interview with German outlet Welt, Polestar CEO Michael Lohscheller noted that only 48 modifications were made. As a result, Polestar can get it to market quickly.

Expect the new, more practical shape to pay dividends in interior space. The 4 coupe already has roomy accommodations for 4 adults. This wagon variant may just be compelling with its added versatility and cabin volume. Most importantly, you have a better view out of the car all around because it no longer forces you to rely on the digital rearview mirror to see out of the back. The less swoopy roofline could also improve vertical space in the cargo area. Nappa leather with ventilated and massaging front seats should remain an option on the wagon variant.

Tech Featuring Google

Like the current crop of Polestar and Volvo models, the 4’s wagon body style will likely use Android OS with Google Built-In. That’s not a bad thing since the Swedes didn’t omit wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. However, expect all the usual suspects to come natively on the 4 wagon’s infotainment system, including Google Maps and Google Assistant. The latter may make way for Gemini, too, since Volvo and Polestar have committed to having it for their future models. On the audio system front, it should feature the same Harman Kardon premium setup with up to 16 speakers and 1,400 watts.

As for driver assistance, the Polestar 4 wagon should feature the same setup as in the current 4. That means a full suite that includes Pilot Assist and the usual suspects like automatic emergency braking, blind spot monitor, and more. The more practical 4 may also introduce a more powerful core computer, allowing for a wider range of functions. A new 800-volt architecture may also find its way into the 4, just like it did in other SEA platform vehicles from fellow Geely-owned brands like Zeekr.

Performance, Scandinavian Style

Polestar emphasizes performance mixed with Scandinavian sensibilities. It’s not the quickest, but you’ll definitely have a blast behind the wheel. However, the potential move to an 800-volt electrical architecture will likely see a power increase and quicker DC charging speeds. The current 400-volt-based 4 has 272 hp and 253 lb-ft of torque in single-motor guise. Dual-motor models have 544 hp and 506 lb-ft. For the North American market, the wagon/SUV variant may also be the first Polestar model to feature a native NACS port.

On the chassis front, expect some minor tweaks to account for the changes in body style, which may be heavier. Dual-motor models will likely retain their standard adaptive dampers, while the single-motor variants feature less sophisticated fixed dampers. Expect stickier tires and a sportier suspension calibration with the Performance pack, which should remain exclusive to the dual-motor models.

The one change that may occur? Dual-motor models may swap to a rear-biased AWD setup, featuring a more powerful electric motor in the back. With the Polestar 3 moving to this setup for 2027, the 4 should follow suit. The Polestar 2 moved to a rear-biased AWD setup as part of its 2024 refresh, while the Polestar 5 is arriving with it as standard.

Furthermore, both Polestar 4 body styles may see a range increase courtesy of the 800-volt architecture, and likely, more efficient electric motors and a new battery pack. Currently, the single-motor model has the highest EPA driving range rating at 310 miles. Meanwhile, dual-motor models check in at 270 miles without the Performance pack or 255 miles with it. However, don’t expect a major increase if Polestar decides to swap in a smaller battery pack. Likely around 5 to 20 miles, depending on configuration.

Polestar 4 Wagon: A Promising New Addition

The Polestar 4 SUV is a promising new addition to the brand’s lineup. Although it’s only a variant of an existing model, it’s poised to bring in potential new consumers into the brand since it slots right in the heart of the market. Most importantly, it’s also a crossover, just in the guise of a lifted wagon that’s slightly larger and wider than a Volvo V60 Cross Country. This vehicle has the appeal and the rear window.

We’re excited to see this new body style on the streets of America. Yes, it’s coming here. Michael Lohscheller, CEO of Polestar, told InsideEVs during an online discussion with international media that the new variant “is absolutely coming to the U.S.” Lohscheller added that it has “genes of an estate, with a window in the back. It’s very progressive. There is no car like this.”

So there you go. This slightly lifted wagon aims to bring something more conventional. It’ll also be built in Korea alongside the Polestar 4 coupe, allowing it to dodge most tariffs.
