2027 Mercedes-AMG GLC 53 First Look: More Cylinders!

Well, the unwind at AMG has officially begun. The 2027 Mercedes-AMG GLC 53 4Matic+ forgoes the high-strung four-cylinder engine. Instead, it swaps in a twincharged 3.0-liter inline-six that uses an exhaust gas turbocharger and an electric auxiliary compressor (read: supercharger). So yes, this engine added complexity.

For duty in the 2027 Mercedes-AMG GLC 53 4Matic+, the six-cylinder engine features several upgrades. This includes new cylinder heads with new intake and exhaust ports, a new intake camshaft, a larger volume intake system, and a new intercooler. This improves torque delivery and throttle response for strong acceleration across the rev range. Additionally, 21.8 psi of boost pressure allows for strong torque and high-revving performance. As a result, the engine makes 443 hp and 443 lb-ft of torque, the latter of which increases to 472 lb-ft for 10 seconds during overboost. Furthermore, it features Mercedes’ second-generation 48-volt integrated starter generator. With 23 hp and 151 lb-ft, it can support the engine at lower speeds and smooth out overall powertrain operation.

To bolster its power, the GLC 53 features a new exhaust system with specially designed resonators. Mercedes says this provides a powerful sound, complete with pops and crackles. The sound intensity varies based on the drive mode, while the AMG Real Performance Sound with selectable exhaust is optional. All of this power gets to the wheels via the AMG SpeedShift TCT nine-speed automatic gearbox. In addition to shorter shift times, it features double declutching and a manual mode controlled through paddle shifters.

Drivers can select between five drive modes: Slippery, Comfort, Sport, Sport+, and Individual. The available AMG Dynamic Plus package adds two extra: Race and Drift. In addition, it also includes active engine mounts and an AMG Performance steering wheel with drive mode buttons.

2027 Mercedes-AMG GLC 53: Buttoned Down

Every 2027 GLC 53 comes standard with the fully-variable 4Matic+ AWD system. Torque distribution varies based on the driving scenario, and it can decouple the front axle to help improve efficiency. Additionally, it sends more power to the rear in the ESC Sport setting and onwards. Models equipped with the AMG Dynamic Plus package come with an electronically controlled limited-slip rear differential for improved handling and stability.

The GLC 53 complements its trick AWD system with the AMG Ride Control suspension. This helps enhance handling and grip thanks to newly tuned steel coil springs, model-specific spring-damper setup, and adaptive dampers. As a result, the GLC 53 betters adapt to road conditions and the driving scenario. Drivers can also select between Comfort, Sport, and Sport+ damper settings. This complements the AMG parameter steering system, which has Sport and Sport+ modes, and can adapt to the selected drive mode. It also requires less effort while maneuvering at low speeds. At higher speeds, the driver receives more feedback with decreased power assistance.

Standard rear-wheel steering helps improve maneuverability and has a maximum steering angle of 2.5 degrees. At up to 60 mph, the rear wheels turn in the opposite direction of the front wheels, improving agility and handling while reducing steering effort. When driving faster than 60 mph, the rear wheels can turn 0.7 degrees, improving stability and helping the car generate lateral force more quickly during direction changes. This results in improved response to the driver’s steering commands.

Finally, when it’s time to stop, massive AMG high-performance brakes come into play. Up front, the GLC 53 has 15.4 x 1.4-inch internally ventilated discs with AMG four-piston fixed calipers. Out back, you’ll find 14.2×1 inch single-piston units with a floating caliper.

Aggressively Sporty Looks

As with other AMG products, the GLC 53’s looks hint at its capabilities. It features a larger front splitter, an AMG rear spoiler, and functional air outlets on the rear fascia. You can further customize the GLC 53 with the Night package, which gives it the blackout look. For the 2027 model year only, the Gold Accents package adds techgold details and subtle AMG graphics. You can also add black 21-inch forged alloy wheels with techgold accents and a silver chrome-finished fuel door.

Pricing hasn’t been announced, but the 2027 Mercedes-AMG GLC 53 4Matic+ goes on sale in the second half of the year. It’ll be available in both the traditional SUV body style and the swoopier coupe variant.
