Jaguar Type 01: The Controversial EV GT Has a Name!

Jaguar has officially revealed the name of its next-generation model: the Type 01. This new luxury four-door GT aims to capture the brand’s spirit of originality through an unmistakable presence and driving character. The vehicle’s name appears as a strikethrough motif where its hood meets the windshield. It uses bold linear graphics, a Jaguar signature for the future.

The Type 01 name represents several key details for the Jaguar brand. Using the word “Type” pays homage to the legendary Jaguar models of the past, which include the iconic E-Type sports car. Meanwhile, 0 represents zero emissions, confirming that it’s a battery-electric vehicle. Finally, the number 1 denotes the vehicle’s status as the first of a new vehicle era for Jaguar. As a whole, the car’s name highlights the brand’s history of innovative design, technology, and performance. It’s a fitting moniker for what will be the most advanced Jaguar vehicle to date.

The Type naming has its roots in racing, too. The first vehicle to wear it was a 1951 C-Type that won the 24 Hours of Le Mans. For the road cars, it became synonymous with an engaging drive, impressive refinement, and excellent composure on the road. The most recent vehicle to wear this naming convention was the F-Type, which was available as either a coupe or a convertible.

When it arrives, the Jaguar Type 01 will feature a new tri-motor setup. According to the automaker, it has a combined output of 986 hp and 959 lb-ft of torque. Later this year, prototypes will make their first public appearance at the Monaco E-Prix racing event wearing a distinct camouflage. The full production model makes its world debut before the end of the year. It features the same crazy exuberant modernist design previewed by the Type 00 concept car.
