Volvo continues to push forward with its electrification plans and the 2028 XC60 is an important part of that. The big news for this update is the upgraded T8 plug-in hybrid system, which now has a 41.2-kWh battery (37.9 kWh usable) and a more powerful electric motor. It still retains the same 455 hp, but torque goes up to 560 lb-ft from 523 lb-ft. Most importantly, the XC60 T8’s all-electric driving range more than doubles from 35 miles to 78 miles! Volvo also managed to keep the SUV under 5,000 lbs. and preserve the total cargo space of 53.6 cubic feet behind the front seats. Looking for a model without a plug? The mild-hybrid B5 model is available with a 247-hp 2.0-liter turbo-four and an eight-speed automatic.
On the design front, Volvo gave the 2028 XC60 another nip and tuck. It refreshed the exterior with a thinner grille, a new take on the Thor’s Hammer lighting signature, and a revised rear end. The new headlights feature Matrix LED technology with 15 segments that can provide better lighting without blinding oncoming traffic. You can also choose from fresh new 20-inch or 21-inch alloy wheels. Additionally, a new Heather Bronze exterior color is now available.
In typical Volvo fashion, safety tech sees many improvements. This includes new cameras, sensors, radar, software, and an advanced safety computer. It allows for new functions like lane change assist as part of Pilot Assist. On the other hand, the surround-view camera now has a 3D view. On the infotainment front, the 2028 XC60 now features Google Gemini and an 11.2-inch touchscreen. The Bowers & Wilkins premium audio system remains available as an option. Additionally, the XC60 benefits from regular over-the-air software updates.
The updated XC60 will be produced in Torslanda, Sweden, and Charleston, South Carolina.
