Hot on the heels of its smaller siblings, the 2028 Volvo XC90 follows suit and doubles down on electrification. How? It’s now available with the same long-range plug-in hybrid system as the XC60. That takes the existing T8 setup and adds a more powerful electric motor and a large 41.2-kWh battery (37.9 kWh usable). Although it retains the same 455 hp, torque increases to 560 lb-ft from the current model’s 523.
Beyond the increased torque, the 2028 Volvo XC90 goes farther in all-electric mode. On a single charge, it can travel an impressive 73 miles! That’s more than double the outgoing car’s 33 miles! Its total driving range isn’t bad, too, at 560 miles with a full tank and charge. According to Volvo, the updated XC90 T8 can hit 60 mph in 4.9 seconds, a number we suspect is conservative. Meanwhile, the SUV retains a respectable 68.3 cubic feet of total cargo capacity on the seven-seat variants. On a level 2 AC charger, you can fully charge the battery in under six hours.
For those looking for an XC90 without a plug, the mild-hybrid B5 and B6 models remain as 2027 models. Both include a 48-volt lithium-ion battery and an electric motor acting as an integrated starter-generator. Like the T8 model, they come standard with AWD. The B5 model uses a 2.0-liter turbo-four with 247 hp and 266 lb-ft of torque. On the other hand, the B6 model takes the same formula and adds a supercharger to the mix. This raises output to 295 hp and 310 lb-ft. All XC90s use an eight-speed automatic transmission.
Expect the 2028 XC90 T8 to go on sale early next year. Prices should remain similar to the current model. However, we wouldn’t be surprised if the T8’s enhanced capabilities raises its MSRP.
