2026 Mercedes-Benz CLA 220 Arrives As A Hybrid

Mercedes-Benz has announced more information regarding the 2026 CLA 220. The second powertrain option adds something for those who aren’t ready to go all-in on battery-electric vehicles, but want some form of electrification. Although it’s technically a 48-volt system, this setup is far from a mild hybrid. In terms of exterior design, the hybrid model looks identical to its all-electric sibling. The only difference? Hybrid models get a radiator grille with a chrome-finished star pattern.

The 2026 Mercedes-Benz CLA 220 operates closer to a Toyota Prius than Mercedes’ own mild hybrid setup found on the GLC 300. It features a 27-horsepower electric motor backed by a lightweight lithium-ion battery with a usable capacity of 1.3 kWh. Mercedes integrates the electric motor into the eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission to maximize space efficiency. In city driving, the CLA 220 can operate in all-electric mode and can coast up to 60 mph by decoupling the drivetrain. Additionally, it can also recuperate up to 25 kW of energy in all eight gears.

This new hybrid setup also allows for a broader torque curve with the gas engine included. Additionally, the electric motor and a disconnect clutch handle starting and stopping the engine. This eliminates the need for a traditional pinion starter, all while smoothing out the system’s operation.

2027 Mercedes-Benz CLA 220: New Engine, New Tech

What about the gas engine? That’s a new 1.5-liter turbo-four from Mercedes’ new FAME family. It runs on the Miller cycle, specifically during partial loads, to maximize efficiency. Additionally, this allows for a relatively high compression ratio of 12:1, especially for something with a turbocharger. Total system output is 208 hp and 280 lb-ft of torque. That’s down 13 hp over the outgoing CLA 250, but up 22 lb-ft of torque. Mercedes says the CLA 220 can hit 60 mph in around 7.1 seconds.

Dubbed the M252, this engine features an all-aluminum crankcase, NANOSLIDE cylinder liner coating, and a cylinder head with a partially integrated exhaust manifold. On the other hand, the turbocharger has a segmented turbine and switchable scroll connection. To meet future emissions standards, the M252 has a compact charge-air path and an exhaust system mounted close to the engine. It also features a 48-volt electronic air conditioning system with reduced friction and can operate with the engine off or in all-electric driving.

Like its all-electric bretheren, the CLA 220 makes full use of Mercedes-Benz’s latest tech features. That means it includes the AI-enhanced MB.OS interface, and MBUX Surround Navigation co-developed with Google. The MBUX Superscreen is also available, featuring 10.25-inch digital gauge cluster, a 14-inch touchscreen, and a 14-inch front passenger display. The CLA 220 also offers the MB.DRIVE suite of driver assistance technologies. You can add extra active safety tech like Steering Assist and Lane Change Assist too.

Expect the 2026 Mercedes-Benz CLA 220 to arrive early next year, following the EV.
