Polestar has announced that its vehicles will gain Google Gemini via an over-the-air software update. Essentially an upgrade to the existing Google Assistant, Gemini is the tech giant’s next-generation voice assistant powered by artificial intelligence (AI). Most importantly, the entire lineup, except for the Polestar 1. That car uses the old Volvo Sensus infotainment system with a portrait-style nine-inch touchscreen. However, Volvo vehicles have since ditched that interface in favor of Google UI.
Google Gemini uses generative AI. This means you can have a more natural conversation with their virtual assistant. That’s in addition to the simple commands you can already use with the existing Google Assistant in Polestar vehicles. How do you activate your new in-vehicle assistant? Simply say, “Hey Google, let’s talk.” That wakes up Gemini and allows it to do everything from answer your questions, brainstorm with you, and more on the go. When it arrives via an over-the-air update, the new AI-based voice assistant will replace the current Google Assistant on Polestar’s vehicles.
As part of its move to add more Google tech in its vehicles’ infotainment systems, Polestar hosted a guided demonstration at an event called Slush in Helsinki, Finland. Aimed specifically at startups and potential investors, it facilitates the meeting of both groups under one event. Google and Polestar had the new 5 on hand to show off the first automotive application of Gemini.
Expected to arrive in 2026, Polestar vehicles will be among the first to have Gemini built in as standard. Whether through over-the-air updates or straight out of the factory, Polestar is doubling down on Google tech across its lineup from the 2 to the 5. Expect other automakers to follow suit since several already have Google Built In. These include Honda, General Motors, and Nissan in North America.
