Google Gemini Functionality Added to Volvo and Polestar Vehicles

Google Gemini functionality has expanded to more vehicles. This time, Volvo and Polestar both announced that they’re adding artificial intelligence to their vehicles. The addition of Gemini follows a massive over-the-air update for Volvo vehicles that added their latest UX to many vehicles dating back to 2020. On the other hand, Polestar was one of the first to introduce Google Built-In with the Polestar 2, a system we enjoyed on the example we leased for three years.

With the addition of Google Gemini, Volvo and Polestar owners can now use natural voice when conversing with the vehicle’s AI assistant. You can even send a text message and have Gemini translate it into a different language that it currently supports. Gemini can also help you brainstorm ideas for a vacation and gifts, and find restaurants on your current route. Need to change the vibe during your road trip? Simply tell Gemini to play a specific playlist or have it curate one to fit the mood.

So, when can you expect Gemini to arrive in your vehicle? Polestar started adding it on April 30. Eligible vehicles will have a pop-up on the center display prompting them to opt in or decline. Over time, Google Gemini will replace the current Google Assistant. There are also no hardware changes required on all Polestar vehicles except the Polestar 1. For Volvo, Gemini will be available on vehicles dating back to 2020. An over-the-air software update will add the AI assistant to the vehicles. Keep in mind that not all Volvo vehicles dating back to 2020 may be eligible, especially those without Google Built-In.

Initially, Google Gemini will launch on Volvo and Polestar models in the U.S. with its language set to English. Additional markets will be added in the coming weeks.
