Volkswagen has announced some changes for its plant at Chattanooga, Tennessee, including the end of ID.4 production there. The German brand revealed that the facility will shift focus to higher-volume models to support its growth in North America. Its key player? The second-generation 2027 Atlas, which begins production this summer and arrives at dealerships in the fall.
For the last three years, the Atlas was Volkswagen’s second-best-selling model, right behind the Tiguan compact SUV. As part of the production shuffle, Volkswagen will no longer build the ID.4 in Chattanooga starting mid-April 2026. However, 2026 ID.4s remain available and are expected to support customer demand into 2027. Employees who worked in the ID.4 line will transfer to other positions in the plant.

The German automaker did say that it’s exploring ways to introduce a new model specifically intended to meet the needs of the U.S. market. Volkswagen will announce details on that model after it makes a decision. One thing stuck out to us, though: Volkswagen didn’t kill the ID.4 off completely. A new version is coming to North America, with details coming at a later date.
We suspect that it’s a heavily refreshed model, likely with new tech. Will it include the software stack sourced from Rivian? Likely not. That may not come until a true next-generation model arrives. This variant Volkswagen noted in its announcement may be the renamed ID. Tiguan. Expect this model to feature a similar front fascia to the latest Tiguan, but with ID.4 elements still intact. What about under the skin, you ask? It likely has the same batteries and electric motors as the current car. Like the exterior, expect minimal changes in terms of the interior and infotainment system.
We look forward to finding out more about the ID.4’s successor very soon.
