2027 Mercedes-Benz EQS Brings Tech and Range Improvements

The 2027 Mercedes-Benz EQS has arrived and like recently updated vehicles from the German automaker, the changes are all under the skin. With that said, let’s start with the design. Mercedes kept the EQS’ bubbly shape intact and refined it. You now have headlights with a three-pointed star pattern for the daytime running lights. You can also opt for two styles. One features an illuminated Mercedes-Benz hood ornament to complement the new faux grille with three-pointed star patterns.

Meanwhile, the AMG Line style brings a sportier look and ditches the chrome bar patterns. It also features an illuminated Mercedes-Benz logo on the grille and a more pronounced lower rear diffuser. Despite these tweaks, the 2027 Mercedes-Benz EQS still retains its 0.20 coefficient of drag, making it one of the most aerodynamic vehicles available.

As part of this refresh, the EQS introduces the new generation Digital Light. It features standard micro LED technology, a powerful chip, and a light module that’s 50 percent more efficient. On the other hand, the ultra-wide high beam is now integrated into the cornering light, which now responds more precisely thanks to camera and map data. For the first time, the U.S.-spec EQS now comes with the partial high beam function.

2027 Mercedes-Benz EQS: All About Energy Efficiency

Looking under the skin, the 2027 Mercedes-Benz EQS receives some major upgrades. All models now come with an 800-volt electrical architecture and a 122-kWh battery. The latter allows the EQS 450+ to travel a whopping 925 km or 575 miles on the WLTP cycle! That’s bonkers!

Meanwhile, the 800-volt system allows the EQS to DC charge at peak rates of 350 kW. That allows it to recover 320 km or 199 miles in 10 minutes under ideal conditions. At a 400-volt station, the EQS can virtually divide the battery into two parts, allowing it to peak at 175 kW. Energy recuperation through regenerative braking has also increased, allowing it to bring in up to 385 kW.

To keep the battery dimensions the same, Mercedes uses cells with anodes that blend silicone oxide with graphite. This allows it to store more energy per kilogram thanks to its higher gravimetric energy density. Additionally, the increased volumetric density while keeping the battery the same size and reducing the amount of cobalt used. Additionally, the electric motors are more efficient and more compact than the ones found in the pre-facelift EQS. The front unit in the dual-motor AWD also disconnects when not needed, allowing the car to operate more efficiently.

As for the rear motor, it features a two-speed transmission to help improve efficiency. First gear supports quick acceleration from a standstill, while second is for highway power delivery and enhancing efficiency in all driving scenarios.

Heightened Comfort and Agility

The 2027 EQS marks the first time a German brand offers steer-by-wire on a production vehicle. This minimizes steering effort from the driver and does not require them to change their grip. Additionally, it works in conjunction with the standard rear-wheel steering system to improve handling and agility. However, the EQS remains a massive sedan designed for comfort, so keep your expectations in check.

Speaking of ride quality, the standard Airmatic air suspension promises to give you a sublime one. It even features an intelligent damper mode that automatically adjusts damping before you drive over a bump. This helps increase ride comfort, especially for rear seat passengers. The system uses Car-to-X communication with other Mercedes-Benz vehicles and the Mercedes-Benz Cloud to acquire road information. Mercedes has applied to patent this technology, which it developed in-house.

2027 Mercedes-Benz EQS: Smart Tech Backed by AI

Just like the refreshed S-Class, the 2027 EQS goes all-in on AI. The MBUX Virtual Assist utilizes the collective knowledge of the internet and multiple AI agents to create a type of onboard avatar. This is complemented by the MBUX Hyperscreen, which houses 55 inches’ worth of screen real estate under one glass panel. It now features unique ambient styles for a personalized environment and a wealth of available apps including several streaming services. The front passenger’s screen can even support Disney+ and YouTube!

The MBUX interface comes with built-in navigation that uses Google Maps data. A new feature called MBUX Navigation with Electric Intelligence can now take into account multiple factors that impact range. These include construction, steep passes, and more, allowing the car to respond dynamically to changes in driving style and road conditions. The system can also plan charging stops when needed and include it to the total travel time.

Other tech features include a digital key and a full suite of driver assistance features. The latter comes backed by Artificial Intelligence algorithms trained to process surrounding traffic conditions. These include lane change assist, Evasive Steering Function Plus, and Proactive Lane Change Assist. Distance Assist Distronic, Mercedes-speak for adaptive cruise control, MB. Drive Parking Assist, and MB. Drive Parking Assist with a 360-degree camera comes standard. Furthermore, Digital Extra: Reverse is also available and allows the car to automatical reverse part of its most recent route.

Maximum Comfort and Luxury

Since Mercedes bills the EQS as the all-electric S-Class, it comes with a wealth of luxury features. It features heated seatbelts just like the S-Class. The rear units even soft beltbags that can inflate during a severe frontal impact to reduce peak loads on the chest by tripling the seatbelt area. It also has a HEPA filter that can filter out 99.65 percent of particles.

For those in the rear, the EQS has an available rear seat entertainment system. It features two 13.1-inch displays and remotes that control everything from the climate controls to the entertainment system. Integrated HD cameras allow for in- car video conferencing through Microsoft Teams, Zoom, and Webex. Heated rear seats, a wireless charger, luxury headrests, and comfort armrests also come standard. For an optimum listening experience, don’t forget to check the box for the 15-speaker Burmester High-End 3D surround sound system, which has 710 watts and Dolby Atmos capability.

Want to further customize your 2027 EQS? Mercedes’ Manufaktur program has you covered. It now offers a new Black Poplar wood trim with a fine line structure, and Nappa leather with laurel decorative stitchin in Macchiato Beige and Space Grey two-tone. Two new exclusive exterior colors are also available: Black Sparkling with glass flakes and Verde Silver Magno.
