Hyundai has revealed more details about the second-generation Nexo hydrogen fuel cell vehicle. Described by the Korean brand as a major leap forward for FCV technology, the 2026 Hyundai Nexo receives a significant update to its fuel cell stack and power electronics systems. The latter doubles battery output to 80 kW from 40 kW and works in tandem with a more efficient fuel cell stack that now has a max gross output of 110 kW. That’s a 16 percent increase over the old 95 kW. Total net system output is up 11 percent, too, 94 kW. As a result, these enhancements increase the total system output to 190 kW. In comparison, the old car’s total system output was 135 kW.
The powertrain improvements on the 2026 Hyundai Nexo allow the new electric motor to deliver 150 kW. This enables the car to go from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 7.8 seconds, 1.4 seconds quicker than its predecessor. Furthermore, Hyundai projects that the new Nexo will receive a WLTP-estimated driving range rating of up to 826 km or 513 miles, depending on the wheel size. It also features a larger 6.69-kg hydrogen tank without cutting into interior space.

Complementing the powertrain improvements are aerodynamic enhancements like an optimized underbody and improved air flow management to reduce drag and maximize efficiency. Meanwhile, Active Noise Control and sound-absorbing tires keep the ride quiet. Additionally, the e-Handling system uses electric motor torque control to enhance grip, stability, and steering response, improving ride and handling. Moreover, the Smart Regenerative System reduces driver workload by automatically adjusting the regenerative braking based on navigation data, the proximity of vehicles ahead, and accounting for features like speed cameras and bumps. European-spec models will also be rated to tow 1,000 kg or 2,204 lbs.
2026 Hyundai Nexo: Upscale and Modern
On the tech front, the 2026 Nexo comes with Hyundai’s latest infotainment system featuring dual 12.3-inch displays. The car also comes with over-the-air software update capability, AI-powered voice recognition, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a 14-speaker Bang & Olufsen premium audio system. For additional convenience, you can add a head-up display and Digital Key 2, the latter of which turns your phone into your car’s key. Like Hyundai’s battery-electric models, the Nexo supports V2L capability, allowing the car to power electronic devices. Finally, it includes Hyundai’s full driver assistance suite.
On the design front, the Nexo sports Hyundai’s latest design language, complete with plenty of pixel-inspired details. The SUV also features design details specific to fuel cell vehicles and an angular rear end that may evoke the Pontiac Aztek in one way or another. Inside, the Nexo features plenty of storage and more space for people and cargo than its predecessor. It also sports Hyundai’s sleek new design language that highlights just how advanced this vehicle is. Additionally, the Nexo includes Hyundai’s Premium Relaxation Seats up front, which include leg rests and slim backs for additional knee clearance and legroom for rear seat passengers. Eco-friendly materials feature heavily in the Nexo’s interior, highlighting Hyundai Motor Group’s commitment to keeping things environmentally friendly.
Expect the 2206 Hyundai Nexo to arrive in North America after it goes on sale in Europe, Korea, and select regions. However, its availability may be limited to California, just like the first-generation model.
