Bentley Continental GT Supersports Ditches Electrified Parts

We know the Bentley Continental GT as the quintessential large, ultra-luxurious grand touring coupe. However, the British automaker has turned the performance dial up several notches, all while making it lighter. Meet the Bentley Continental GT Supersports. It ditches all the plug-in hybrid bits and powers only two sets of wheels. That’s right, the fourth-ever Supersports model in Bentley’s history is RWD, and it’s also the first rear-drive Continental GT. It’s lighter too. How much? Roughly 800 kg or a whopping 1,763 pounds less than a standard Continental GT. This effectively puts its gross curb weight below two tons.

Bentley Continental GT Supersports: All About Performance

Under the hood, the Bentley Continental GT Supersports has a strengthened 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 engine with 657 hp and 590 lb-ft of torque. It features a stronger crankcase, uprated cylinder heads, and larger turbos to achieve this output. Power goes out to the rear wheels via an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission redeveloped specifically for the Supersports. This gearbox includes uprated clutches and a new shifting strategy. The latter results in sharper, more responsive shifts and optimal stability when downshifting during braking. Additionally, the Continental GT Supersports has a model-specific, full-length titanium exhaust co-developed with Akrapovic that gives it a distinctly deep and powerful sound.

Out back, an electronically controlled limited-slip differential works in conjunction with brake-based torque vectoring to enhance turn-in and maximize traction. Additionally, Bentley engineers kept the rear-wheel steering system to optimize agility. Meanwhile, the ESC now has three modes. Touring mode is identical to the Sport mode of the Continental GT Speed, but pairs with softer damping, a quieter exhaust, and increased ride height. Bentley mode opens up the exhaust valves, makes launch control available, changes shifting strategy, and sharpens both throttle and chassis response. Finally, Sport mode puts the Continental GT Supersports in full attack mode and maximum responsiveness.

All About the Handling

The Bentley Continental GT Supersport’s suspension uses aluminum control arms up front and multi-link in the rear. In addition to air springs, the Supersports also has new twin-chamber dampers independently controlled via an ECU. It also includes Bentley Dynamic Ride, a proprietary 48-volt electric anti-roll system, and massive 10-piston 440-mm carbon-silicon-carbide discs front disc brakes. The rear brakes are ever so slightly smaller at 410 mm and have four pistons. Bentley worked with Manthey Racing to develop the Continental GT Supersports’ 22-inch forged and machined aluminum wheels. They’re wrapped in Pirelli P Zero tires or, optionally, Pirelli Trofeo RS. With the latter, the Supersports corners around 30 percent quicker than a Continental GT Speed. with peak lateral forces of up to 1.3 g.

To help it go faster, the Continental GT Supersports sees massive weight savings. In addition to going gas-only and RWD, the aluminum roof has been replaced with a carbon fiber one, cutting weight and lowering the center of gravity. Additionally, the Supersports deletes the rear seats and reduces rear cabin insulation. The audio system has also been limited to just the front cabin, while certain driver assistance features have been deleted. Inside, two lightweight heated sports seats are mounted lower. A carbon fiber tub replaces the rear seats. Meanwhile, arbon fiber trim complements the leather and Dinamica upholstery.

Extensive use of carbon fiber plays a role in keeping the Continental GT Supersports light. These include a new lower front bumper with an integrated front splitter, stacked dive planes, side sills, fender blades, a rear diffuser, and a fixed rear spoiler. Together, these components generate 300 kg or 661 pounds of downforce.
