Toyota Camry GT-S Concept Goes All-In on Performance

Remember the Camry TRD? Yeah, the V6-powered one with a TRD-tuned suspension and a cat-back exhaust? It’s proof that a sporty Camry can exist, and Toyota’s latest SEMA build expands on that. The Toyota Camry GT-S Concept offers a glimpse of what’s possible in a showroom-ready production vehicle. Plus, it’s wearing a heritage moniker that first debuted in the legendary Corolla GT-S.

Based on the XSE trim with AWD, the Toyota Camry GT-S Concept features the stock fifth-generation Toyota Hybrid System. In this application, a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine and three electric motors are used, resulting in a total output of 232 hp. Since this has AWD, the third electric motor resides in the rear axle. However, that’s the only bit that remains stock. Adjustable coilovers lower the car by 1.5 inches. It also comes with eight-piston front and six-piston rear brakes for maximum stopping power. Meanwhile, the 20-inch wheels come standard, giving the GT-S Concept a sportier look.

In terms of design, the Camry GT-S Concept has an enhanced rear fascia and bumper complemented by a performance exhaust. Up front and on the side, aerodynamic bits help add to the sporty looks. The skirts even have a GT-S badge, a nod to a legendary Toyota: the Corolla GT-S or AE86. A striking Inferno Flare exterior color rounds out the styling details alongside a contrasting black roof and rear spoiler. Additionally, the hood is painted in black and Inferno Flare, giving it a look reminiscent of the two-tone layouts from the Toyota Crown and Lexus RZ.

Although Toyota isn’t building the GT-S, it’s nice to see that a sporty Camry with more substance than the XSE. However, this hints at what’s possible and may eventually lead to a GR Sport model with more suspension tweaks and potentially more power.
