Hybrids have arrived at Genesis with the introduction of the GV80 Hybrid. This is the second type of electrified powertrain option from the Korean luxury brand. Currently, it offers two all-electric models, the GV60 and Electrified GV70. The GV80 Hybrid joins this lineup as the brand’s first hybrid offering when it launches next month. It’s the first of many to come. The GV70 is also expected to add hybrid variants, a standard one and an EREV or extended-range electric vehicle.
Look closely at the Genesis GV80 Hybrid and it’s clear that it uses something familiar. That’s right, this SUV features Hyundai Motor Group’s new parallel hybrid system. Like in the Hyundai Palisade Hybrid and Kia Telluride Hybrid, it couples a 2.5-liter turbo-four with two electric motors and a geared transmission. Unlike the transverse application, this longitudinal setup ditches the six-speed automatic for a new seven-speed unit. It’s also the first Hyundai Motor Group hybrid system to feature a liquid-cooled battery. Total output checks in at 352 hp and 390 lb-ft of torque, allowing the GV80 Hybrid to hit 100 km/h or 62 mph in around 7.1 seconds during internal testing.
Versus its gas counterpart, the GV80 Hybrid is 25 percent more efficient. It features expanded electric motor engagement across a broader range of driving conditions. As a result, the GV80 Hybrid can stay in EV mode longer, enabling it to operate more efficiently. It can also optimize battery usage and regenerative braking application based on road conditions.
How can you differentiate the GV80 Hybrid from a gas one? Simple! It has a new grille. Four new two-tone interior colors have also been introduced. This includes Obsidian Black/Taiga Green and Ultramarine Blue with Travertine Beige.
Expect the GV80 Hybrid to arrive later this year, likely as a 2027 model.
