Toyota GR Yaris Receives More Upgrades

Toyota continues the kaizen philosophy of constant improvement with the GR Yaris. This time, the updates went to the steering system. The hot hatch now comes with an updated steering wheel that allows you to turn it 180 degrees without regripping. It also features a new button layout for the controls derived from motorsports for better operability. Buttons with ringed-in illumination help improve nighttime use. Additionally, the smaller diameter helps improve steering response.

Behind the new steering wheel, the Toyota GR Yaris receives an upgraded electric power steering system. Using learnings from motorsport, the automaker improved the system, enabling it to function reliably even with high-performance tires. The system also improves performance during high-load cornering that requires high-level braking force. An optimized torsion bar rigidity within the torque sensor and modified control software expanded the steering torque detection range. This helps improve assistance during hard cornering.

In addition to improving the steering system and adding a new steering wheel, certain trims receive new tires. Bridgestone Potenza Race high-performance tires now come standard on select models. These tires feature extended-period, high-grip performance developed through extensive testing. A revised pattern, internal structure, and rubber compound improve control at the limit. Toyota also optimized the shock-damping characteristics to maximize tire performance.

Under the hood, it’s the same potent 1.6-liter turbo-three with 300 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. A six-speed manual or the eight-speed GAZOO Racing Direct Automatic are the only transmissions available. Certain GR Yaris models also have heated front seats and a heated steering wheel when equipped with either the Navigation or Comfort package.

We expect the mechanical changes to make their way to the GR Corolla here in North America. Toyota has always made the same improvements to both vehicles, so expect that to continue for now.
