2027 BMW iX3 First Look: The Future, Now

The first BMW Neue Klasse model is here! The 2027 BMW iX3 marks the biggest paradigm shift for the brand in a long time. It introduces a new battery-electric powertrain and a new generation of the iDrive interface. Basically, this SUV is new from the ground up. Most importantly, it’s going to start at around $60,000, meaning it can potentially redefine the luxury compact SUV segment.

2027 BMW iX3: Efficiency, Enhanced

When the 2027 iX3 arrives in mid-2026, it’ll be available initially in the dual-motor 50 xDrive model. This features AWD as standard and has a total output of 463 hp and 476 lb-ft of torque. Compared to its predecessor, this new sixth-generation all-electric powertrain reduces energy losses by 40%, all while cutting weight by 10% and manufacturing costs by 20%.

Meanwhile, the high-voltage battery features cylindrical cells with 20% higher energy density and enables 30% faster charging speeds. The 108-kWh battery itself is also integrated into the vehicle architecture to help cut weight. Driving range rating is expected to check in at 400 miles.

On top of that, the iX3 features an 800-volt charging architecture, allowing it to DC charge at up to 400 kW. As a result, it can add 230 miles of range in just 10 minutes when plugged into a compatible charger. Don’t worry if you can’t find an 800-volt charger, though. BMW also optimized the iX3 to charge quickly at 400-volt DC chargers. Plus, it features what BMW calls an Energy Master, which helps ensure safe and smart battery operation.

At home, the iX3 can charge up to 19.2 kW, provided you have the right home charger. BMW announced that it will offer the Wallbox Professional for home charging, but didn’t disclose a time frame. All U.S.-bound iX3s come standard with the NACS port and a CCS adapter from the factory. It’ll also feature vehicle-to-load (V2L) and vehicle-to-home (V2H) capabilities, allowing owners to use the car as a mobile power source.

All-New Brains and Chassis

The 2027 BMW iX3 features a newly developed electronic architecture with four high-performance computers, which BMW refers to as “superbrains.” They combine their processing power to help enhance driving dynamics, automated driving, infotainment, and comfort-enhancing functions. These four “superbrains” also form the foundation of a new software architecture, which enables separate vehicle and software development for the next generation of software-defined vehicles.

Divided into four zones, the “superbrains” reduce weight by 30% compared to their predecessor, while eliminating nearly 2,000 feet of wiring. New smart eFuses also replace conventional safety fuses, allowing for intelligent power modes based on different vehicle states to help improve efficiency. This new electrical architecture also enables the vehicle to better interface with the My BMW app, allowing for seamless integration.

One of the supercomputers, called the Heart of Joy, manages the drivertrain, braking, energy recuperation, and steering. It processes information up to 10 times faster than a conventional control unit, allowing the car to take full advantage of its EV powertrain. The Heart of Joy works together with the BMW Dynamic Performance Control software stack to handle all driving-related functions to ensure that the iX3 drives exactly as a BMW should.

Artificial intelligence software is used to enhance the driving experience. Symbiotic Drive allows for seamless transition between supporting the driver and allowing the driver to take control. Plus, symbiotic brakes enable the driver to make inputs without disengaging the active driver assistance features. The system can also detect if the driver intends to change lanes and won’t intervene or take corrective action.

2027 BMW iX3: All-Around Dynamics

BMW says it tuned the iX3 with an emphasis on everyday usability and driving comfort. It features a slim battery that helps lower the center of gravity and provides a near 50/50 front-to-rear weight distribution. The front suspension features double-joint springs, with the steering gear located in front of the axle. Additionally, increased caster and firmer rubber mounts help improve steering feel for added precision and responsiveness. In the rear, a new five-link setup with a separate spring and damper arrangement allows for more cargo space.

Cutting-Edge Infotainment

The 2027 iX3 debuts BMW’s latest infotainment system and the new Digital Key Plus. The latter uses ultra-wideband and Bluetooth technologies to turn smartphones or smartwatches into the vehicle’s key. Owners can also share the Digital Key with others using a messaging app. Now for the new multimedia interface, which is backed by BMW Operating System X. The new BMW Panoramic Vision features a display that spans the entire dash and a 17.9-inch central display. Plus, it includes a new Intelligent Personal Assistant that responds better to natural speech and controls nearly every aspect of the infotainment system.

Cloud-based BMW Maps navigation calculates charging-optimized routes once you enter a destination. It also adds charging stops optimized to help you get to your destination the fastest. For those still wanting to use their smartphones, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto come standard. Both can project info into the BMW Panoramic Vision display or the optional 3D head-up display. Additionally, the My Mode goes beyond just driving dynamics, giving you more ways to customize the car to your liking. Finally, there’s an optional 13-speaker Harman Kardon premium audio system to maximize your listening experience on the road.

Futuristic Inside and Out

The iX3 marks the launch of BMW’s latest design language. It features an upright front fascia complete with a distinct new light signature that mimics the brand’s iconic kidney grille. Horizontal LED strips take the place of the rounded lights. The rear end looks similar to what we find in the latest X3 and iX, while the side profile feels hefty thanks to its lines and surfacing.

Inside, it’s all about minimalism. Two massive displays give it a modern look, while the clean, uncluttered layout gives the iX3’s cabin a welcoming vibe. New seats promise high comfort levels and come trimmed in Veganza, highlighting the interior’s eco-focused nature. You can also choose Merino Leather if you must have the real thing. There’s plenty of cargo space, too, 30.4 cubic feet with all seats up, or 65 cubic feet with the rear folded.

Expect deliveries of the 2027 BMW iX3 to start in the middle of 2026. Vehicles bound for the U.S. will be built at the BMW Group’s Debrecen Plant in Hungary.
