Mitsubishi has announced major updates for its most popular model: the Outlander. For 2026, the compact SUV remains the only one in its segment that offers a third row, albeit a small one. However, you’ll need to look under the sheet metal to find the major updates beyond the new mid-level LE trim. The SEL Black Edition, Trail Edition, and Ralliart models round out the 2026 Mitsubishi Outlander lineup.

2026 Mitsubishi Outlander: Electrified Improvements
The big news for 2026 is the new engine under the gas Outlander’s hood. Out goes the Nissan-sourced naturally aspirated 2.5-liter four-cylinder, in comes a Mitsubishi-designed 1.5-liter turbo-four. If the Chinese market Outlander is any indication, it’ll have 161 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque on its own. For the U.S., the engine includes a 48-volt mild hybrid system, which could result in slightly more power. Mitsubishi says the mild hybrid system “delivers increased confidence and drivability” because its added torque helps improve in off-the-line acceleration.
Meanwhile, the 2026 Outlander Plug-in Hybrid receives the same design and suspension updates that the gas Outlander received for 2025. That includes a new Yamaha premium audio system, an optional 12.3-inch touchscreen, and 20-inch alloy wheels. Mitsubishi also updated the plug-in hybrid system with a new, higher-capacity battery, which it says increases all-electric range and decreases the amount of time the gas engine runs. In terms of output, the current car makes 248 hp and 332 lb-ft of torque. The updated Outlander PHEV should receive increased power thanks to its new battery. Additionally, a revised suspension promises improved ride comfort and a confident, reassuring feel.
The Most Important Mitsubishi
In the U.S., the Outlander remains the most important model for the Mitsubishi brand, so it’s not surprising that it received major updates two model years in a row. The 2026 Mitsubishi Outlander arrives in the fourth quarter of 2025, starting with the gas models. Plug-in hybrid variants arrive in the first quarter of 2026.
