The Volvo XC40 gets a second refresh for 2028, and it brings a lot of changes under the skin. Since this is a Volvo, let’s start with the latest safety technologies. The refreshed XC40 receives upgraded sensors, cameras, and radar, which complement the new advanced safety computer and software. This enables improved safety and driver support functions like emergency steering assistance and automatic emergency braking. Additionally, the XC40 now includes door opening alert, which keeps occupants from whacking other traffic or pedestrians. Meanwhile, Pilot Assist now includes automatic lane-changing capability.
On the infotainment front, the 2028 Volvo XC40 comes with Google Built-In and a new 11.2-inch touchscreen. It features Google Gemini, giving you an AI assistant inside the vehicle. Additionally, the XC40 benefits from over-the-air software updates that keep it fresh with the latest software. Inside the cabin, new premium upholsteries and updated interior illumination are among the key changes.
On the other hand, Volvo updated the XC40’s exterior design with a revised front fascia featuring a new take on the Thor’s Hammer LED lighting signature. It now feature Matrix LED lighting, an updated front and rear bumpers, a new hood, and LED taillights. You can also choose from new alloy wheel options up to 20 inches in diameter.
Under the hood, the 2028 XC40 sticks to a familiar powertrain. Available only in the B5 AWD configuration for the U.S., it uses a mild-hybrid 2.0-liter turbo-four with 247 hp paired to an eight-speed automatic transmission. A 48-volt battery and a small electric motor acting as an integrated starter-generator support the gas engine, improving efficiency and smoothing out its operation. On its own, the electric motor only makes 10 hp and 30 lb-ft of torque. Volvo expects the 2028 XC40 to receive an EPA rating of 25/32/27 mpg city/highway/combined.
