2027 Volvo EX60 Teased with 400-Mile Range

In two weeks, the 2027 Volvo EX60 makes its world debut. However, Volvo has spilled more beans about its upcoming compact SUV, all while showing us a glimpse of its design. Let’s start with the latter. Based on two of the teaser images, the EX60 retains a familiar look, complete with Thor’s Hammer LED headlights.

Unlike the larger EX90, this one doesn’t do that fancy trick that hides the main projectors behind the daytime running lights. Either way, this rig looks good. We also get a glimpse of a sizable frunk with organizer bins in it, hinting at its added versatility. Late last year, we got a glimpse of the EX60’s side profile, which essentially confirms that it looks similar to the XC60, just modernized with details from the larger EX90.

2027 Volvo EX60: More Range, Faster Charging

Now for the good stuff. Volvo has revealed that the 2027 EX60 will have the best-in-class driving range of 400 miles. That’s with an AWD configuration, too. However, Volvo didn’t say what wheel size it used to achieve that. It’s best to assume that’s with lighter, smaller, and more aerodynamic wheels since larger ones tend to drop an EV’s driving range, especially when equipped with stickier tires.

Volvo also integrated the battery directly into the structure using cell-to-body technology and developed the electric motors in-house. As a result, the EX60 maximizes energy efficiency all while cutting excess weight. A new battery cell design also carefully balances energy density and power delivery, further extending the EX60’s driving range.

The EX60 is the first Volvo vehicle to use the SPA3 architecture. Moreover, it allows for maximum efficiency of key systems in the vehicle and matches the driving range of gas-powered vehicles. What’s more, the EX60 is the first Volvo to make use of mega casting. That means it replaces hundreds of smaller parts with a single, high-precision casting in the production process, cutting the car’s weight.

To complement that long driving range, the EX60 also has quick DC charging capability. Thanks to its 800-volt electrical system and in-house-developed software, it can add up to 168 miles in 10 minutes under ideal conditions when using a 400 kW charger. Additionally, the EX60 makes use of lighter materials and less heat generation to support faster charging times. Volvo also uses new charging algorithms developed from partner Breathe Battery Technologies. This constantly adjusts how the battery takes in power to keep it in its ideal operating zone at all times, and in varying weather conditions. Furthermore, it also comes with a 10-year battery warranty for added peace of mind.
