2023 Subaru Solterra Update 3: Drive Modes

AWD and Subaru are synonymous. Except for the BRZ and the upcoming Uncharted, every vehicle wearing a Subaru badge comes standard with AWD. In most vehicles, the Symmetrical AWD system uses a mechanical setup. Meanwhile, the all-electric 2023 Subaru Solterra uses a fully electronic setup with two electric motors. This means one motor independently controls the front axle while another handles the rear. At the same time, its three drive modes also determine how the system splits power, giving the Solterra more nuance on the road.

The 2026 Solterra’s AWD system does more than improve traction in snow, rain, dirt, or unpaved roads. It’s also about improved grip and handling on pavement. In Normal mode, the power is split evenly, 50/50, front to rear, giving the SUV a stable, neutral feel. For most driving situations, this is the mode to use.

In Power mode, the Solterra responds more eagerly to your inputs, all while tightening up the steering. Additionally, the electric motors vary their torque output more aggressively, giving the car a sportier feel from behind the wheel. When driven in a spirited manner, the rear motor also likes to overdrive the rear wheels. This allows the rear to rotate predictably, which is especially helpful on winding roads. Plus, the AWD system maximizes grip when accelerating, resulting in drama-free straight-line performance.

On the other end of the spectrum, Eco mode helps maximize efficiency. This helps an already miserly EV use even less energy thanks to its ability to go in FWD mode. For me, this mode gets the most out of the Solterra because it relies mainly on the front motor for the majority of driving scenarios. Need additional power or traction? Simply press down deeper on the accelerator, and the car immediately re-engages the rear motor. This highlights the beauty of an electronic AWD system. It brings the best of both worlds: the efficiency of 2WD and the traction performance of AWD for the times when it’s needed.

Just As Useful On the Trail

The 2023 Solterra shows the next evolution of Subaru’s identity. Its versatile AWD system highlights its benefits in daily driving, while also maintaining its capability in snow, gravel, mud, and light off-road trails. Despite being developed in collaboration with Toyota, the Solterra feels like a proper Subaru. Its road manners and AWD system earn it that badge. It’s even got dual-mode X-Mode and Grip Control for added assistance off-road.

It’s easy to dismiss the 2023 Subaru Solterra as a re-badged Toyota bZ4X. While true, the tuning of its powertrain, AWD system, and suspension all scream Subaru. Yes, the parts are shared and the design is nearly identical, but the tuning? All Subaru. The three drive modes highlight this clearly, adding to the car’s identity.
