Lucid has announced that it plans to accelerate to full autonomy using technology from NVIDIA. This partnership will allow the automaker to deliver one of the first privately owned vehicles in the world with level 4 autonomous driving capabilities. Powering it is the NVIDIA DRIVE AV platform. Additionally, NVIDIA’s Industrial AI platform will be used to unlock next-generation manufacturing efficiencies. On top of that, the automaker plans to leverage the NVIDIA Omniverse and NVIDIA Enterprise software libraries to build smart factories.
The partnership also brings new automated driving features to the Gravity SUV, which recently debuted in Europe. By integrating NVIDIA’s scalable software-defined architecture, Lucid keeps its vehicles at the forefront of technological progress, especially with continuous over-the-air software updates. The brand’s autonomous journey started with its Dream Drive Pro system, which debuted in 2021 on the Air sedan. It recently gained hands-free driving and lane-changing capability through an over-the-air update.
Lucid’s new autonomy roadmap starts with eyes-on, point-to-point driving on the Gravity. Its future midsize vehicles will also include the system. A centralized architecture and redundant processor unifies all automated driving functions for seamless evolution. Additionally, the manufacturing process goes all-in on software by implementing predictive analytics, intelligent robotics, and real-time process optimization. Lucid says these will enhance quality control and allow for reconfigurable production lines to support scaling operations.
In addition to the autonomy and software partnership announcement, Lucid included a sneak peak of its third model. The shadowy vehicle next to the Gravity is its baby brother, which appears to have a sleeker, coupe-like profile. Additionally, its shape screams Tesla Model Y competitor, especially with that curvaceous shape. Likely called the Earth, Lucid’s third model launches its midsize family. Production is expected to start late next year and will be followed by an off-road model.
