The 2026 Mazda CX-5 has been teased ahead of its global debut through some teaser shots. In these images, the SUV’s design appears evolutionary, building on the already timeless look of its predecessor. A key detail that hints that this is the new model is its taillights. These adopt the pattern from the larger CX-70 and CX-90, bringing it in line with Mazda’s current design language. Additionally, it’s safe to say that the new CX-5 modernizes the current “Kodo: Soul of Motion” philosophy.

Based on the spy shots all over the internet, Mazda exercised restraint in redesigning its best-selling SUV. Since it consists of the bulk of sales every year, it can’t afford to mess up this proven formula. From design to the driving experience, the CX-5 must feel like a Mazda to stand out from the crowd. However, the CX-5 also needs to keep up with the times. Currently, it only offers one engine in two flavors: naturally aspirated or turbocharged. Those wanting a hybrid need to move up to the CX-50, CX-70, or CX-90. The addition of an electrified CX-5 model brings more options to Mazda’s growing lineup, bringing more consumers into the brand.
The CX-5 also marks the introduction of a new powertrain to Mazda’s range. In addition to the existing Skyactiv-G engines, a new Skyactiv-Z powertrain is reportedly coming. That super-efficient engine forms the basis of Mazda’s in-house developed hybrid powertrain. Although the automaker remains quiet about its details, we expect it to use similar electric motors and batteries to those of Toyota. However, the Mazda Hybrid System may opt for a conventional gear transmission instead of a planetary gear set, as used by Toyota and Subaru.
From what we can tell, the 2026 Mazda CX-5 looks to continue the success of its predecessor, especially with the addition of a hybrid model.
